Life has its unexpected moments. Respite offers temporary housing to people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism when these moments arise, ensuring minimal disruption. Respite is also available for short, predetermined stretches.
Reasons for respite vary. Sometimes families and caregivers need relief from caregiving due to health issues, emergencies, or to ensure their own self-care. Other times, Step By Step consumers themselves need extra support while sick, or a temporary break from a living situation.
In all scenarios, Step By Step staff sees to it that individuals have not only the interim housing they need but all necessary support and care. Steps are taken to ensure minimal disruption in all aspects of life including medication, appointments, community obligations and employment. All respite support is carried out in a person-centered manner consistent with Step By Step’s larger philosophy.
Respite services are typically offered in Step By Step housing, but sometimes take place in alternative Lifesharing homes licensed by the Department of Human Services (DHS).
Respite can be short-term (hourly) or might last for multiple days, depending on the person’s unique situation.
